MIDDLEFIELD, Conn. (Oct., 2015) – The adage “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” has always emphasized the importance of eating healthy. Not only is it essential to fuel the human body with healthy options, but it is in everyone’s best interest that there is a conscious effort to preserve the earth that produces that food. Lyman Orchards has a long tradition of upholding of this concept, and the “fruits” of their labor were recognized this year when they were officially Eco Apple® certified by Red Tomato.
Launched in 2005, the Eco Apple® program is a partnership between farmers and scientific advisors to advance the most progressive and environmentally responsible growing processes in the Northeast Region. Founded by non-profit marketing organization, Red Tomato, the Eco Apple® program was created from a decade of collaborative research between growers and scientific researchers. Farms that are honored with this recognition have put forth the effort to create the most eco-sensitive, minimally treated and natural methods available when growing their fruits.
"We are thrilled to receive the designation of being Eco Apple® certified,” said John Lyman III, executive vice president, Lyman Orchards. “Lyman Orchards is committed to adhering to advanced growing practices, ensuring that we grow delicious fruit while maintaining the environment, allowing us to thrive. It's important for the sustainability of the land, but also allows us to offer our customers the best fruit possible.”
The apple crop at Lyman Orchards is especially abundant this year. Combined with a large pumpkin crop, the entire family will anjoy a great experience picking their own.
Eco Apple® growers use smart practices to promote the health of their trees and soil while simultaneously nurturing pollinators and protecting biodiversity. Pesky insects are thwarted with biological methods such as predators, mating disruption and trapping. The end result of these efforts is a balanced ecosystem combined with safer working conditions, and fabulous food. Each orchard was inspected and certified by the IPM Institute of North America.
Lyman Orchard’s eco-friendly Pick Your Own apples will be available into November. They make a great snack as you navigate the innovative PEZ Candy Corn Maze. $1 from every maze ticket sold is donated to the Pediatric Cancer Unit of the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. To date, nearly $500,000 has been raised since 2000.
