Jostaberries

They're kind of tart, kind of sweet, kind of tangy, and really neat. At Lyman's, we're the only commercial grower of Jostaberries that we know of on the east coast.

Jostaberries (pronounced YUST-a-berries) are a cross between a gooseberry and a black currant. Their appearance is that of a gooseberry, with the deep purple (almost black) coloring of the black currant. The origins of this unique cross are in Germany, and the plants are found in the Netherlands and are now being grown on America's West Coast.

Like blueberries, jostaberries grow on bushes, and are easily harvested. The harvesting season is short, as Jostaberries are ripe for just a few weeks each year in July. They're available at both Lyman's Pick-Your-Own, and at the Farm Market.

Jostaberries are a versatile fruit. Depending upon your taste buds, you might find the flavor to be tart like a cranberry, and they can be substituted in any recipe calling for cranberries. Jostaberries taste great in muffins (at Lyman's our Tri-Berry Muffins featuring Jostaberries, Blueberries and Raspberries are a specialty). When heated in a microwave, Jostaberry preserves can be drizzled on top of ice cream and slathered on pancakes as a great alternative to syrup. To add zing to your chicken, use Jostaberry Preserves as a glaze before baking. So, when you want more than "just a berry," think of Lyman's Jostaberries!

Season

Jostaberries ripen at Lyman Orchards about mid-July. The season lasts only two weeks, so don't delay, or you'll miss this delicious treat!

Choosing

Select berries that are dark purple, nearly black in color. They should be firm to the touch.

Storing

Gently wash freshly picked berries and drain. They can be kept up to one week in the refrigerator in a plastic container.

Freezing

Jostaberries hold up well to freezing. Simply wash the berries, drain and pat dry. Place berries single layer on a cookie sheet and freeze. After they are frozen, berries can be placed into a plastic container or bag.
