Food Check Out Week is a national celebration recognizing the affordability of food in America!
Did you know that most Americans need to work only 30 to 35 days in order to earn enough disposable income to pay for their annual food supply! On average, about 10% of our income is spent on food. (This amount is relatively low compared to other countries throughout the world.)
The day's activities include:
Cherry Pie Making Workshop for Kids! One session -- 11am. Registrations are now being accepted; please call 860/349-6043. Space is limited!
Omelette Making Contest: 12 noon - 1:30pm Get cracking! Nine contestants will test their omelette making skills in front of our panel of judges and spectators! Participating judges include Chef Jamie Roraback from NBC Channel 30! Prizes will be awarded to the top three finalists. Register for contest in the Apple Barrel on event day.
Earth Apple Demonstration Agriculture is one of the most vital industries of the world. Learn, by this demonstration, how much of the earth's land is actually used to grow our food! You will be very surprised!

Valentine's Cake Decorating Workshop (For Kids)

Come celebrate the fun side of winter! Hours of indoor and outdoor family fun include our annual Food Expo with all the free samples you can eat.
Watch as the Connecticut Valley Siberian Husky Club performs mushing demonstrations!
If you're still hungry after all the free samples, feast on a great sandwich or salad from our Deli, or warm up with a good cup of our homemade soup.

Ice Sculpting Show & Demonstration!
March 2, 2008 (Winterfest Weekend)
Watch more than 9,000 pounds of ice come to life right before your eyes! You will be amazed watching an experienced team of ice sculptors transform four and a half tons of ice into beautifully carved works of art.
Using picks, chainsaws, and other tools of their trade, they will convert the Apple Barrel deck into a sparkling winter scene. The theme of this year's Winterfest celebration honors America's farms. As one of our nation's oldest family-owned farms, celebrating the joys of our country's agricultural heritage is very close to our heart. a task our ice artists take right to heart.
Kids, be among the first to climb aboard a glistening old-fashioned farm tractor -- made entirely of ice!
Visit with life-size ice sculptures of farm animals, every furry detail carved with care by our expert sculptors!
Led by internationally renowned ice carver, Bill Covitz of Cheshire, CT, our professional team of ice carvers will dazzle you with their very cool creations!
Parents, bring your cameras! This event provides priceless photo opportunities and unforgettable winter fun for all!

Fruit Tree Pruning Workshop! (For Adults)
March 1 & 2, 2008 (Winterfest Weekend)
Employing correct pruning techniques has a direct impact upon the health and productivity of your fruit trees. Visitors will enjoy this free, 2 hour workshop, taught by our experienced orchardists.
Hand-out materials are available. Dress for the weather! This demonstration is held in our orchards; 10am-12 noon. After the demonstration, be sure to stop by the Apple Barrel and warm up with a complimentary cup of coffee or hot
spiced apple cider. Pre-registration required. The group meets first at the Apple Barrel before departing for the orchards.
Easter Apple Hunt
March 15, 2008 (Raindate: March 22, 2008)
Dash for apples in the Easter Hay Maze; Visit with the Easter Bunny; Enjoy a FREE Magic Show; Hop onboard for a Horse-Drawn Wagon Ride! Children ages 1-10 years may participate.
Save the date for Connecticut's Only Easter Apple Hunt! More than 15,000 apples are hidden in our Hay Maze, just waiting to be discovered! Children may keep all apples they find.
(Some are designated for prizes!) Bags for collecting apples are provided.
All children must be pre-registered to participate in the event. Registration forms are available at the Apple Barrel market, or register online.

Phllis Naples-Valenti returns with her incredible recipes and a fun, delicious demonstration about cooking with Lyman apples! Free tastings and recipes are provided. There is no fee to attend the demonstration, but come early -- space is limited!
Holiday Cookie Workshop (for Kids!)
December 6, 2008; two sessions: 11am, 1pm.
Children will make and decorate festive cookies for the holidays! Santa cupcakes; edible snowballs, gingerbread cookie decorating! $8 workshop fee per child; Registrations for this workshop will be accepted after Nov. 1, 2008.
Fruit Basket Making Workshop for Kids!
Sunday, December 7, 2008; 1pm
There is no limit to a child's imagination! Watch the fun as children enjoy creating custom fruit baskets with fresh fruit, candies, cookies, and more treats! All materials are provided. Register at the Apple Barrel market, or call 860/349-6043. Registration fee: $10 per child.
Gingerbread House Holiday Workshop (for Kids!)
December 13, 2008; Two sessions: 11am, 1pm.
Children will receive instruction on constructing and decorating a beautiful gingerbread house for the holidays. Open to children ages 4 years and older. Pre-registration is required; registrations will be accepted after Nov. 1, 2008. Workshop fee: $10 per child.
Lunch with Santa at the Lyman Homestead!
Date to be announced.Enjoy a special visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus in the historic Lyman Homestead! All children receive treats from Santa! Enjoy lunch! Reservations are accepted but not necessary. Visitors are welcomed to explore the first floor rooms of the festively decorated family home.
